HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss and Southeastern Louisiana renew a football rivalry this weekend that was a staple for the schools during the middle part of the 20th century.
When the Golden Eagles and Lions meet Saturday at The Rock for a 6 p.m. contest, it marks only the third time they have met on the gridiron since the 1969 season.
The series began in 1940 with then named Mississippi Southern College (MSC) capturing a 13-6 victory in Hammond. MSC then won the next year in Hattiesburg 43-6 before the series took a hiatus for World War II.
Following the Second World War, beginning in 1946, the two schools played every year but one up until 1959. In fact, from 1948-1951, the two schools were part of the Gulf States Conference and MSC won two of three meetings as league foes, including a 35-6 triumph during the final season of league play.
During that time, SLU won all three of its meetings in the series, with its last one coming 13-7 in Hattiesburg during the 1954 campaign.
From that point, Southern Miss has gone on to win the last 12 games in the series to take an 19-3 overall advantage over the Lions.
The last meeting came during the 2011 season with Southern Miss beating SLU 52-6 in Hattiesburg, Kendrick Hardy rushed for 155 yards of the team's 355 total yards on the ground with a touchdown. That win helped propel the Golden Eagles to a school-record 12-win season and a Conference USA championship that year.
The only other meeting this century was a 45-0 triumph for Southern Miss at The Rock during the 2006 campaign.
Saturday's game can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
