Southern Miss Falls to USF 49-24 Saturday Night at The Rock

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – USF rolled up 369 rushing yards and collected five rushing touchdowns to defeat Southern Miss 49-24 Saturday night at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles fell to 1-2 on the year, while the visiting Bulls improved to 2-1.
Kelly Joiner rushed for 117 yards and Nay'Quan Wright added 105 on the ground as each player collected a rushing touchdown, while the Bulls ended the night with 487 total offensive yards. Joiner scored on a 50-yard run in the fourth quarter, while Wright added a 33-scoring rush late in third.
USF quarterback Bryum Brown threw for 193 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while adding 72 yards on the ground. It was the first time Southern Miss surrendered 300 or more rushing yards since allowing 306 to Florida State last season.
The visitors broke open a 28-21 halftime advantage by scoring the first three touchdowns of the second half as Ta'Ron Keith scored the first one on a three-yard run with 8:12 in the third, before the two additional scores by Wright and Joiner.
Southern Miss completed the scoring with a 31-yard field goal by Connor Gibbs with 7:05 left in the contest.
Southern Miss got 85 yards on the ground from Dreke Clark to lead the rushing attack, while Ethan Crawford threw for 183 yards off the bench, in relief of Tate Rodemaker, who was 10-of-15 for 120 yards and a pair of touchdown throws. John White also saw his first collegiate action and threw for 94 yards on 3-of-5 throws.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 14-0 advantage by scoring on their first two possessions.
On the second play of the contest, Crawford hit the other Southern Miss quarterback, Rodemaker, on a throwback pass for 42 yards that put the ball in Bull territory. After a roughing the passer play on a third-down play to keep the drive alive, Southern Miss capped the first drive with a 19-yard pass from Rodemaker to Kyirin Heath and a 7-0 advantage.
After turning the Bulls over on downs on the next possession, Southern Miss used a seven-play, 65-yard drive which was capped on a 37-yard pass to Kenyon Clay from Rodemaker to make the score 14-0.
The Bulls then scored on their next drive, capping an 11-play, 64-yard drive with a four-yard pass from Brown to Payten Singletary.
USF forced a fumble on the next Southern Miss possession and turned that into seven more points as Kelly Joiner collected a 43-yard scoring run 32 seconds before the end of the opening quarter to tie the game at 14-14.
In the second quarter, Brown hit Joshua Hardeman for a 3-yard score to give the Bulls the 21-14 advantage with 10:52 to play before extending the lead to 14 wehn Brown called his own number for a one-yard sneak up the middle.
Southern Miss closed the gap 2:31 before the half as Crawford collected an 8-yard scoring rush.
The Golden Eagles take to the road next week to finish their non-conference play Saturday, Sept. 21 at Jax State. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
