HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss sprinter Trinity Benson (Slidell, La.) and the Southern Miss women's track and field team were both lauded by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association by earning NCAA Division I All-Academic honors.
Benson, who majored in marketing, earned her honor by holding at least a 3.25 grade point average. During the outdoor season, Benson earned first team honors by winning the league's 400 meters race, along with being a part of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams at the Sun Belt Championship. She went on to compete in the NCAA East Regional in all three events.
During the indoor season, Benson scored in three different events for the school at the Sun Belt Championships. She won the 60 meters race in that meet with a personal best time of 7.38, while also placed fourth in that meet in the 400 meters with a time of 55.622. She rounded out her time at the league championship event with a 3rd-place showing on the 4x400 relay squad. That was the same squad that collected a school-record time of 3:40.47 at the Music City Challenge earlier in the winter.
The Golden Eagle women's team also earned USTFCCCA honors by holding a team cumulative grade point average of 3.14. The team must hold an overall 3.0 GPA or higher.
