Softball Drops Series Finale Against South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala.-Southern Miss Softball (22-28, 10-14 Sun Belt) fell to South Alabama (31-17-1, 15-9 Sun Belt) in the series finale Saturday.
Starting pitcher Olivia Lackie threw a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit and two walks with six strikeouts and no runs allowed. Lackie earned her 22nd win of the season while Loganne Stepp received the loss in the regular season finale.
While Natalie Taylor drew a walk in the first inning, Lackie retired every other batter she faced in the first three innings as South Alabama scored two runs apiece in the second and third.
The Jaguars struck first as Odalys Cordova hit an RBI triple after Lee came into the circle for Stepp. Pinch hitting for South Alabama, Shelby Garret hit a sacrifice fly to make the game 2-0.
Freshman pitcher BrookLynn White entered the circle in the third inning. The Jaguars added to the lead in the frame as Olivia Branstetter hit an RBI single, shortly followed by another sacrifice fly from Bailey Welch.
Taylor earned Southern Miss' first hit of the day in the fourth inning and stole second for her fourth stolen base of the season. However, Lackie recorded a strikeout and a flyout to left field stranded Taylor.
The Jaguars added another two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Gabby Stagner hit a two-run home run. The play marked her 14th home run of the season, setting a single season record for the Jaguars.
Lackie and the Jaguars closed out the game in the seventh inning, retiring the side in order to complete the shutout.
Southern Miss now turns to the Sun Belt Tournament in San Marcos, Texas as the No. 9 seed. The Golden Eagles will begin play Wednesday, May 8 against James Madison.
