HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss head women's soccer coach Mohammed El-Zare on Friday afternoon announced the hiring of Darby Nettles Pittman as the programs newest assistant coach.
"I am excited for the challenge, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from Coach Mo," Nettles Pittman said. "As someone with a reputation for being honest and gritty, I feel like this is a great fit for me."
Nettles Pittman is coming off a stint at George County Middle School where she has been head coach since 2021. The Mississippi native also coaches at Mississippi Reign Futbol Club with U11-U18 girl's teams. Prior to getting into the coaching industry, Nettles Pittman played collegiate soccer at William Carey from 2013-17 and went on to play professionally for Gulf Coast Rangers Ladies FC – now known as Union 10 in the Gulf Coast Premier League.
"I am extremely excited to bring Darby on board. She will bring professionalism, passion, and alignment to the Golden Eagle vision. Darby has been relentlessly growing youth soccer in southeast Mississippi for the past nine years," El-Zare said. "She is an upcoming young talent that we have known about for some time. Her experiences coaching and teaching, as well as the challenges that she has overcome, add significance to our program."
Nettles Pittman prepped at Greene County High School and was inducted into the Greene County Hall of Fame after a decorated high school career. She joined the varsity team at Greene County as a seventh grader and captained the program for three seasons. She was also handed the Female Leadership Award for her efforts on and off the pitch. Nettles Pittman earned her U.S. Soccer National C license in 2023.
During her prep career, Nettles Pittman also played for South Mississippi Soccer Club. Darby Nettles has continued her leadership efforts as she is currently a member of the 2023-24 Leadership Academy Cohort at George County. Her husband, Dusty, founded the Mississippi Reign Futbol Club in 2015. The family has a four-year-old son, Malik.
