HAMMOND, La.-While Southern Miss (8-10) held an early lead against Southeastern (16-5), the Lady Lions amassed six runs over the final three innings to take Wednesday night's match 6-2 at Oak Park.
Starter Loganne Stepp received the loss for Southern Miss, while the Lady Lions' Cera Blanchard earned her sixth win of the season.
Stepp held Southeastern scoreless through the first two innings, fanning three batters, including two consecutive strikeouts in the second inning.
After Shelby Allen drew a walk to start the third, Hannah Borden launched a two-run home run over center field to put Southern Miss up first 2-0. The play marked Borden's fourth homer of the season and second consecutive game recording a home run shot. The graduate student catcher now needs six more home runs to break the all-time program record (41), set by Megan Hill.Â
While Southern Miss maintained momentum as Stepp retired the side in order in the third, the Lady Lions tied the game with a two RBI double from Coleen Kulivan. Kayla Agner ended the frame catching a runner trying to steal third.
Stepp's night ended in the fifth, as BrookLynn White came in relief. Stepp finished the game tying her career-high of four strikeouts, while allowing five hits, three earned runs and two walks.
White allowed one walk in the frame, sending a Lady Lion home on loaded bases to swing the lead to Southeastern, but the freshman pitcher escaped the jam with a final strikeout.
Southeastern plated another run on an RBI single from Cam Goodman, followed by a sacrifice fly from Maddie Watson. The Lady Lions added final insurance with a single, leading to Chloe Magee advancing home on a throwing error. Southeastern then retired the side in order to decide the game.
Borden led the Golden Eagles with two hits and two runs batted in, while Mikaila Fox earned the team's other hit with a single in the fifth inning. Allen drew a game-high two walks.
