Men's Tennis Erases Deficit to Beat James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Down 5-2 in third set of the deciding match, Olimjon Nabiev decided to play hero as Southern Miss (7-5, 3-1 Sun Belt) men's tennis stormed back to defeat James Madison (7-10, 0-5 Sun Belt) 4-3 on Thursday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early after the Dukes edged out the road team in doubles action. Pasawee Reansuwong and Shamirul Shahril fell 6-4 on court three, while Saheb Sodhi and Nabiev dropped a 7-5 decision on court two. Dakotah Bobo and Henry Lamchinniah went unfinished on court one and was leading 6-5 at the time.
James Madison extended its lead to 2-0 after Shahril fell on court two in singles action. The Golden Eagles finally got on the board thanks to a Lamchinniah win on court four. He cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Francisco Sinopoli. The Dukes, though, went up 3-1 with a win on court one.
Southern Miss needed to win the next three to secure the match and compete the comeback – it did just that. Reansuwong started to flip momentum with a 6-1, 7-5 win on court six over Mario Pena. Olle Noltorp kept it going with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Markus Giersiepen on court five. The match came down to Nabiev and Esteve Agusti on court three. Nabiev got off to a hot start and took the first set 6-2, but Agust answered with a 6-3 win in the second set. Agusti took a 5-2 lead in the final set before Nabiev stormed all the way back to win 7-5 and secure Southern Miss' seventh win of the season.
The Golden Eagles continue their road trip on Saturday at Old Dominion. First serve in Norfolk, Va. is set for 9 a.m. CST.
