HATTIESBURG, Miss.-The Golden Eagles (12-16, 1-3 Sun Belt) began its weekend series against Sun Belt opponent Marshall (17-13, 3-1 Sun Belt) with a loss, falling to the Thundering Herd's six-run fifth inning Friday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Marshall scored all six of its runs in the fifth inning, with a total of five hits and two Southern Miss errors. While the Golden Eagles halved Marshall's advantage later in the game, the team could not overcome the deficit.
Marshall's starter Savannah Rice earned her sixth win of the season, while Jana Lee received the loss.
Southern Miss starter Loganne Stepp and Rice worked through three scoreless innings before Marshall first threatened to score in the fourth. Destiny Washington hit a double, but Southern Miss center fielder Kinsley Gordon made a quick throw to Maria Smith at shortstop, who found catcher Hannah Borden for a tagout of the runner at home plate, ending the frame.
The Golden Eagles then struck first as Gordon hit her first career triple off of the center field wall, driving in Mikaila Fox.
But trouble soon ensued for Southern Miss as Marshall hit an equalizing double. With two runners on base, Lee came in relief for Stepp.
However, the Thundering Herd continued its momentum with a bunt, and added another run from an error. Brooklyn Ulrich then hit a three-run home run to capitalize Marshall's inning.
Southern Miss immediately responded as Shelby Allen followed with a single by a double from Lee, her seventh of the season. Natalie Taylor sent Allen home on a sacrifice fly.
After two walks from Maria Smith and Ryanna Valdivia loaded the bases, KK Agner was hit by a pitch, forcing a runner home. Marshall escaped the jam with a final out to third base on a fielder's choice, leaving three runners stranded.
Lee gave Southern Miss' bats another chance after quickly working through the sixth with two strikeouts. While Hannah Borden singled and Natalie Taylor doubled in the final innings, Southern Miss could not convert any runs.
Lee led the team with two hits and also tied a season-high four strikeouts in the circle. Southern Miss drew six walks, led by two from Smith.
