HATTIESBURG, Miss.- After trailing by two through three innings, Southern Miss Softball (13-16, 2-3 Sun Belt) responded with three consecutive two-run frames to take the second game of the home series against Marshall (17-14, 3-2 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon.
While Marshall held Southern Miss scoreless through the first half of the game, the Golden Eagles created opportunities throughout the match. Southern Miss left a season-high 13 runners on base, with nine coming in the first three innings as Marshall's starter Bub Feringa continued to escape jams with the bases loaded.
However, Southern Miss found a way to convert runs in the bottom of the fourth, answering to Marshall's lead from a two-run home run in the first inning. After Jana Lee singled, right-fielder Natalie Taylor hit her second triple of the season to drive in the team's first run of the day. Maria Smith then batted in another run with a sac bunt.
Marshall threatened to add to its lead in the following frame as BrookLynn White came in relief for Holly Craft. While the Thundering Herd added a run from a sacrifice fly, Kayla Agner stranded three runners with a groundout to first.
Southern Miss carried over its momentum, facing a new Marshall pitcher, Kaleea Washington. While the Golden Eagles started with two quick outs, Shelby Allen hit a single and then stole second. Hannah Borden then launched a two-run homer to give Southern Miss its first lead of the day.
The Golden Eagles continued to build onto that lead as Smith reached base on a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch, facing Marshall's Savannah Rice in the bottom of the sixth. After Mikaila Fox drew a walk, Kinsley Gordon batted in two runs with a double down the left field line.
White closed the game out for Southern Miss on the way to her third career win as a double play from Smith and second baseman Maddie Weeks ended the game in the top of the seventh.
In her second appearance of March, Holly Craft threw four innings for the Golden Eagles to start the game, allowing just two earned runs with two strikeouts.
Borden tied Megan Hill's all-time program record for most career home runs with the home run shot in the fifth inning. Standing at 41 career home runs, Borden needs just one more to set a new program record.
Southern Miss recorded ten hits, a season-high in conference play this season, led by Lee and Taylor's two hits each. Fox also drew a career-high three walks, along with Borden's two walks.
