STARKVILLE, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (8-9, 0-0 SBC) completed a walk-off victory to take both games of its Saturday slate against Alcorn State and Samford, finishing the weekend 3-1 at the Bulldog Invitational at Nusz Park.
Game One (Southern Miss 8-Alcorn State 1)
The Golden Eagles started the day with an 8-1 victory against Alcorn State, driven by eight hits and 11 walks at the plate and backed by a complete game from junior Marissa Frederick.
One game after recording 13 walks, which ranked for the third most in a game in program history, seven different batters drew a total of 11 walks Saturday morning versus the Lady Braves. Shelby Allen led all players with three walks in the match.
As Southern Miss reached the bases, Frederick worked through her first complete game at Southern Miss in just her second start this season. The Lewes, Del. native allowed only two hits with one strikeout and no earned runs on 87 total pitches.
Lauren Lindsey got the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard first in the second inning with a solo home run. Southern Miss then loaded the bases with three walks and Shelby Allen drew another to score KK Agner. However, Ashanti Carter prevented further damage for the Lady Braves with a strikeout to strand three Golden Eagles.
Alcorn State tallied its only run in the third inning with its first hit of the game on an RBI single, but Frederick and the Golden Eagles continued to limit Alcorn's bats throughout the game.Â
Southern Miss continued to build momentum offensively, as Natalie Taylor and Agner hit singles, followed by an RBI single to bat in Taylor. With another walk drawn by Kinsley Gordon, pinch hitter Ansley Hight hit a sacrifice fly to score Agner.
The Golden Eagles mounted three more runs in the sixth inning, starting with an RBI single from Hannah Borden. Agner then earned an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored pinch runner Emily Chandler, and Lindsey got her second run of the game on a wild pitch.
In the seventh inning, Maria Smith singled to left field and stole second. After advancing to third on a flyout, Smith added insurance to the Golden Eagles' lead, scoring a final run on a wild pitch.
Game Two (Southern Miss 6-Samford 5)
Following a thrilling 17-15 decision Friday night against Samford, the Golden Eagles and the Bulldogs were locked in another tight battle entering the final inning.
Coming into the game to relieve BrookLynn White, Frederick inherited two runners on base, but worked through the inning to prevent any runs, handing the Golden Eagles an opportunity to take the game.
Southern Miss did not waste any chances, as Smith and Allen singled to start the frame. After the runners advanced on a wild pitch, Smith scored the equalizing run on a fielder's choice RBI from Lindsey. Carlee Durham then hit the ball into play, and after a Samford throwing error, Caroline Worrell advanced home for the walk-off run.
Allen extended her hitting streak to five games, the longest of her career, with two hits. Borden and Hight led with two RBI on one hit apiece.Â
The Golden Eagles initially held the lead in the game after Hight recorded her second career hit with a two RBI double in the bottom of the second. However, Samford seized the advantage with three runs in the fourth inning.
With her third home run of the season, Borden reclaimed the lead for Southern Miss on a two-run shot in the fifth. With the play, Borden moved up the leaderboards with the second-most RBI in program history.
Samford jumped ahead again, but with a shutout inning, the Golden Eagles completed its second comeback against Samford this weekend and improved Frederick's record to 4-1 on the season.
