Softball Opens Conference Play With Home Series Against ULM

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (11-12) begins its second season of conference competition in the Sun Belt with a home series starting Saturday against ULM at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.

The Golden Eagles split six games last weekend, dropping its midweek contest against Southeastern and winning three of five games at the North Alabama Tournament in Florence, Ala.
The Golden Eagles started the weekend with a pitcher's duel against Murray State, but ultimately fell in eight innings 2-0 to the Racers. The team rebounded with a 9-5 victory against host North Alabama before falling 8-6 in its fourth and final matchup of the season versus Samford. Southern Miss ended the tournament on a high note with consecutive run-rule victories against Detroit Mercy and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Southern Miss Notables
- Graduate student Hannah Borden launched three home runs last week, bringing her within four shots of breaking Megan Hill's all-time program record for most career home runs (41). Borden leads the team with 30 hits, 13 runs, 23 RBI with a .385 batting average and .667 slugging percentage. With six home runs this season, only one player in the Sun Belt has recorded more so far this season. Borden has recorded a hit in 13 consecutive games, the longest streak of her career.
- Junior outfielder Carlee Durham recorded her first hits of the season as a Golden Eagle, registering six hits in five starts at the North Alabama Tournament this weekend. Durham recorded a career-high three hits and three RBI versus UMES Sunday. Durham also stole two bases over the weekend.
- Junior pitcher Marissa Frederick posted a team-best 1.23 ERA in three appearances this weekend, allowing 11 hits and just two earned runs and walks in 14 innings pitched. The Lewes, Del. native threw a career-high eight innings in a 2-0 loss against Murray State, allowing three hits and no earned runs. Frederick paces the pitching staff with a season ERA of 4.23 and four wins. BrookLynn White and Loganne Stepp lead the team in innings pitched with a combined 91.2 innings pitched.
- Southern Miss tied a season-high 13 hits versus UMES Sunday in Florence, Ala. The Golden Eagles have recorded 13 hits in three games this season.
- Southern Miss enters its second season competing in the Sun Belt Conference, being picked to finish ninth in the SBC Softball Preseason Coaches Poll. The Golden Eagles look to build upon the success of its inaugural season in the conference that saw the program's first conference tournament appearance since 2019.
Scouting ULM
- The Warhawks enter the week with a 17-9 record, coming off of a midweek loss to Mississippi State and weekend series loss to McNeese State. After dropping the first two matches versus McNeese State, ULM picked up a 4-1 win against the Cowgirls.
- ULM is led by head coach Molly Fichtner, who enters her sixth season leading the program. Fichtner recently earned her 100th career victory last month when the Warhawks beat Lindenwood 3-1.
- ULM was picked to finish eighth in the Sun Belt's Preseason Poll after rounding the 2023 season with a 7-17 standing in the Sun Belt. The Warhawks advanced to the Sun Belt Quarterfinals before being eliminated by conference champions Louisiana.
- The Warhawks have recorded 186 hits, the third most in the Sun Belt this season, led by Carys Platt's 33 hits and Loudres Bacon's 30 hits. Platt's .471 batting average paces the conference.
- ULM's pitching staff boasts a 1.73 ERA, the second-best in the Sun Belt, fanning 123 batters and allowing opponents to hit at just .200. Maddie Nichols leads the team with 64 innings pitched, posting a 1.31 ERA, only allowing 12 earned runs and 17 hits. Victoria Abrams follows Nichols with a 2.22 ERA over 56 innings pitched.
