JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-While Southern Miss (1-3, 0-0 SBC) dropped a game against Fordham early Saturday, the Golden Eagles rebounded with its strongest outing yet against Jacksonville to earn the first win of the season.
Â
Game One: Fordham 3-Southern Miss 2
Â
Despite holding an advantage throughout the game, Southern Miss fell to Fordham 3-2 again as the Rams mounted three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a comeback victory.
Â
Â
The Golden Eagles looked to flip the script after their loss to Fordham on Friday, and maintained a 2-0 lead as freshman pitcher BrookLynn White pitched six shutout innings.Â
Â
White earned her first start in the circle for Southern Miss after appearing for three innings versus North Florida Friday night. The Maumelle, Ark. native worked through six innings, allowing six hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Â
Â
White allowed her first run in the final inning on an RBI double from Fordham's Kate McGuire. Jana Lee came in relief after, but Fordham continued its momentum by tying the game and then deciding the contest on as Neleh Nogay hit an RBI single.
Â
Hannah Borden provided both of the team's runs in the game with one hit and two RBI, which ranks her for the sixth most RBI (105) in program history.
Â
The catcher struck first with an RBI double in the third inning and then added insurance in the fifth with a sacrifice fly by the catcher.
Â
Game Two: Southern Miss 5-Jacksonville 2
Â
Backed by a combined pitching effort from Jana Lee and Holly Craft, the Golden Eagles knocked off the Dolphins 5-2 on their home field to wrap up the day.
Â
While Jacksonville outhit Southern Miss 6-2, the Golden Eagles capitalized on a key opportunity in the second inning.Â
Â
Kinsley Gordon slammed the team's first home run of the season on a three-run shot, giving the team the differential it needed in the game.
Â
After three innings pitched by Lee, Craft entered the circle and closed out the game for the Golden Eagles.
Â
In just her second appearance, Craft threw four shutout innings with four strikeouts and two hits and two walks allowed.
Â
Southern Miss has now won both of its matchups against Jacksonville, with the last victory coming in the 2007 season when the programs first met.
