HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss interim head football coach Reed Springer spoke with members of the media following practice at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Stringer discussed the team's off week and this weekend's current Sun Belt opponent Marshall.

Saturday's contest can be heard on any station of the Southern Miss Sports Network with the Voice of the Golden Eagles, John Cox, and Lee Roberts starting the day at 12:30 p.m. CT with their pregame show. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Here is what Stringer said to the media:
On coming off of bye week:
"We practiced really hard last week. We had three hard days, very physical, and worked on trying to get better as a football team, but then we gave them a long weekend football-wise with Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. We brought them back yesterday morning to start our initial game-planning meetings and then we got them on the field for a 45-minute runaround, let them get woken up and set the expectations for the week. They were excited. They are refreshed and we are starting to get some guys that were banged up back, which is exciting. We have four big games coming up, and it's a big four-week stretch, so we needed that and it came at a good time. Our kids are excited to get back out there."
On positive takeaways from JMU game:
"We did a lot of great things, especially defensively, and we did some good things offensively, too. We've been talking about how we need to keep getting better at what we do and quit having costly penalties and mistakes that are huge deals in the game. We're going to take the momentum of some of the things we did well and really talk about the things we didn't do well to try to get those fixed, and try to play more of a complete game. For us to win a football game, especially these last four, we're going to have to play a complete game in all three phases and not beat ourselves. I told the guys that if we go out there and execute, and do our job, and they just beat us and they are better than us, I can live with that. It's just us shooting ourselves in the foot is the thing we need to get fixed and we're working on hard."
On team's motivation:
"Hopefully, all these guys love football. That's something that I've asked our staff to really be paying attention to…I just want to make sure the guys are going out on that football field and giving us everything they've got for their teammates, themselves, and for Southern Miss. We really haven't had that problem, but it's late in the season. Sometimes, you might have some guys thinking about what the next steps are. We're all thinking about things like that, but we all love the game of football. We all came here to represent Southern Miss and that's what we're going to do and I'm going to make sure our guys go out there and do that."
On Marshall:
"They are a really good football team. Coach [Charles] Huff does a really good job at recruiting and they have a lot of talented players. The portal has given and taken from them a little bit, so they are trying to find their way just like everybody in our conference really is. That's the thing you see every week. There are really no teams that are just so much better than everyone else. You can go from the very top to the bottom and there's a lot of parity in this league. Anybody can win at any time. It's just whoever plays the best game and the most complete game is going to have that opportunity. Marshall has a lot of good players and a couple of guys on defense that can get after the quarterback that we will have to be aware of. They have been able to run the ball some this year, which is something that we are going to stress about stopping. It's going to be a heck of a challenge, but our guys are going to be prepared for it, and we're going to work hard this week to be prepared. I expect a really physical football game."
On preparing for forecasted rain on Saturday:
"We will start doing the wet ball drill and just emphasize not turning the ball over and squeezing the ball, and ripping the ball out. We haven't had a wet game and it hasn't rained here yet, so it will be a unique deal if it does, but we'll be prepared for it, because they've got to play in it too. It is what it is and we'll have a plan to prepare ourselves for it, and our guys will have to overcome it."
