MBB: WATSON’S CAREER NIGHT NOT ENOUGH AS MONTANA STATE TOPS SOUTHERN MISS
11/24/2024 10:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Southern Miss (2-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) men's basketball fell 79-59 on Sunday night to Montana State (2-4, 0-0 Big Sky) in the first game of the Basketball Travelers Invitational in Bozeman, Mont. The Golden Eagles got a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds from Christian Watson in the loss.
Denijay Harris got the scoring started on the first possession of the game as he drained a mid-range jumper. Watson followed with a three-pointer that silenced the crowd at Worthington Arena early in the game.
Southern Miss was up 5-0 before Montana State scored its first points. Jett Montgomery hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 10-10, but that was the last time the Golden Eagles were tied up. The Bobcats followed the freshman's triple with a 9-0 run that put the score at 19-10.
Montana State were up 17 with 4:03 left in the half before Southern Miss went on a 9-3 run to cut it to 11. The Golden Eagles then surrendered a string of free throws and saw a rough play on Neftali Alvarez – which went the other way – which put Montana State up 15 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles outscored the Bobcats 19-12 to open the second half, which put the game at a nine-point lead for the home team. The final basket for Southern Miss in that stretch was a massive putback dunk from Cobie Montgomery that made it 51-42. The momentum from the big-time slam was negated after Montgomery got called for a technical after the SportsCenter Top-10 dunk.
After the dunk, Montana State went on an 11-2 run that slowed the Golden Eagles down. Tyler Patterson then drained the 10th three-pointer for the Bobcats with 5:29 to play and drained any Golden Eagle surge that was left.
The Bobcats went on to hand Southern Miss its second-straight double-digit loss on the road. Montana's Brandon Walker matched Watson's 19 points, while Brian Goracke and Patterson each made three three-pointers.
Cobie Montgomery finished with nine points and Harris added another eight points. Watson had seven rebounds as the Golden Eagles outrebounded Montana State 36-30. Alvarez picked up a season-high five assists.
Southern Miss shot 35.7 percent from the floor and only 15 percent from deep. The Bobcats finished shooting the ball at a 50 percent clip from the floor.
