HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It was raining three-pointers at Reed Green Coliseum on Tuesday night as the Golden Eagles cruised to a 104-65 win over Loyola New Orleans. The men's basketball program has now won 28 of its last 31 home games dating back to the start of the 2022-23 season.
Jay Ladner's squad set several personal bests for the sixth-year head coach, which started with the most points scored in a game under the head man. The Golden Eagles also set top-five marks in points in a half, field goals made, field goals attempted, three-pointers made, rebounds, assists, and blocks. Southern Miss moved to 91-9 when scoring at least 100 points and 3-0 under Ladner in such instances.
Loyola New Orleans didn't make it easy on the Golden Eagles in the early parts of the game as the Wolf Pack jumped to a three-point lead five minutes into the game. Following the first media timeout of the game, though, it was all Southern Miss from there.
The duo of Alfred Worrell Jr. and Cobie Montgomery were deadly from deep as the two combined for nine three-pointers. Montgomery capped a 10-0 run in the first half that put Southern Miss ahead by 10 after hitting his second triple in 60 seconds. Minutes later Jett Montgomery started a 12-0 run – the longest run of the season for Southern Miss – with a trey of his own. Denijay Harris ended that run with an emphatic dunk to put the Golden Eagles ahead by 24. Southern Miss went from a tied game to a 24-point lead in under eight minutes.

The second half started with the Christian Watson show as he scored the first four points, including a huge dunk after he was on the receiving end of an alley-oop pass from Harris. Watson then started an 11-0 run that put Southern Miss ahead by 35 with 12:46 to play.
Ladner started relying on his reserves with about 10 minutes to play and got solid minutes out of every Golden Eagle that dressed out. Brewer Carruth and Christian Reid scored their first collegiate points tonight, while Carruth's first field goal game on a breakaway dunk on a pass from Trey Alfonso.
Alfonso tacked on a final basket of his own that gave Southern Miss a 40-point lead with 1:26 to play, which would tie its largest lead of the night and season.
