HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team takes to the road for the first time in 2023 and looks toward possibly its toughest challenge of the season against No. 4 ranked Florida State at Bobby Bowden Field at Doak S. Walker Stadium in Tallahassee Saturday evening.
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. CT and the game can be seen via the ACC Network as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles, which defeated Alcorn State 40-14 in their opener last Saturday, play an Associated Press Top 5 team for the first time since meeting No. 1 Alabama during the 2021 campaign.
In his debut last weekend, Southern Miss quarterback Billy Wiles threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Eagles compiled 441 total offensive yards in the contest. Wide receiver Jakarius Caston recorded his first 100-yard receiving game with 104 yards on five catches. Dreke Clark led the Golden Eagles on the ground with 54 yards on nine carries, while Frank Gore, Jr., added 29 yards to give him 2,920 for his career, moving him into sixth on the school's all-time rushing chart and ahead of Sam DeJarnette (2,908).
Senior Jay Stanley led the defense with a pair of interceptions in the contest to give him nine for his career as he also added a pair of pass deflections and three tackles.
Place kicker Andrew Stein, who saw his first extensive action since 2019, made four field goals to highlight the special teams play for the Golden Eagles.
Saturday's contest marks the 24th meeting between the two schools with the Seminoles holding a 14-8-1 record. FSU has won the last two meetings, including a 42-13 triumph in the 2017 Independence Bowl. The last victory for Southern Miss over the Seminoles came during a designated Golden Eagle home game, but was played at the old Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. Brett Favre connected with Anthony Harris with 23 second left to lift Southern Miss to a 30-26 victory over the No. 6 Seminoles.
FSU won its 2023 debut, as they defeated LSU 45-24 in Orlando last Sunday evening.
Following the FSU contest, the Golden Eagles return home to face nationally ranked Tulane in a 3 p.m. contest, Saturday, Sept. 16. Tickets are still available for that contest and can be purchased at SouthernMissTickets.com.
