Troy Defeats Southern Miss Volleyball In Straight Sets

TROY, Ala.-Southern Miss (5-9, 0-3 Sun Belt) fell to Troy (5-8, 3-0 Sun Belt) in straight sets (16-25, 11-25, 22-25) Friday night in the Trojan Arena, extending its losing streak to four games.

The Golden Eagles struggled to get its attack going in the game, hitting a negative percentage through two sets and a .052 clip overall, while Troy fired on all cylinders with a match percentage of .340. The Trojans recorded 45 kills, while Southern Miss tallied a season-low 23 kills with 18 errors.

Troy controlled the first two sets of the match, cruising ahead on early 4-0 runs. The Trojans secured an eight-point lead in the opening set, and despite six service errors and a response by Cara Atkinson's kill and block, Troy pushed ahead with an advantage for a 25-16 set victory.

The Trojans continued their ways in the following set, pushing to a nine-point lead on a 6-1 run and eventually closing the set 25-11 as Southern Miss hit -.188 through the period.

The Golden Eagles turned it around in the third set, though, taking the first lead of the game from a kill by Mia Wesley at 7-6. Atkinson and freshman Sadie McAda later gave the team another lead with a block in a competitive battle as both teams tied in the set nine times with four lead changes.

While Southern Miss hit a much improved .270 percentage in the set and forced two timeouts trailing closely behind, Troy was able to hang on for a 25-22 victory to take its fourth consecutive sweep this season.

McAda led the Golden Eagles with seven kills and added a career-high three blocks. Atkinson tied her season-high of five blocks along with five kills. Wesley also recorded five kills and six digs. Libero Megan Harris led the team with 15 digs.
