Southern Miss Falls in Straight Sets to Undefeated Arizona State

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-Southern Miss fell in straight sets to the undefeated Arizona State Sun Devils Saturday morning to round out the Beale Street Challenge in Memphis, Tenn. with a 2-1 record. The Golden Eagles finish the nonconference slate with a 5-6 overall record, heading into competition in the Sun Belt.
Arizona State improved to 12-0, remaining as one of the last undefeated teams in the country. The Sun Devils have only lost 3 of 39 sets played this season.
The Golden Eagles came close to scratching a set victory twice in the match, but Arizona State rallied on two late runs, helping the program extend to six straight sweeps.
Both teams fought back and forth in the first set, with 14 ties and eight lead changes. Southern Miss gained ground after two kills from Cara Atkinson and an ace from Aysu Dalogullari, but the Sun Devils took the lead away on a 6-0 run. Arizona State held its lead to win the set 25-22.
Arizona State ran away with the second set as the team scored 13 unanswered points to start the set. Southern Miss responded but was overwhelmed 25-6 by Arizona State's .478 hitting percentage in the set.
Southern Miss regathered from the loss, taking an early lead in the next period. The Sun Devils exchanged points with the Golden Eagles, tying the game a total of 16 times in the set. Dalogularri notched two straight kills, followed by one from Atkinson to give Southern Miss a one-point lead, but as in the first set, the Sun Devils jumped ahead on a late run on the way to a 25-21 victory.
Atkinson led the Golden Eagles with seven kills followed by six kills from Dalogullari and Reagan Leinen. Ari Barksdale also tallied four kills, hitting .800 on five attempts. Defensively, libero Megan Harris led Southern Miss with 12 digs.
