Sun Belt Announces 2023-24 Men's Basketball Schedule

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Jay Ladner and the Southern Miss men's basketball team, in conjunction with the Sun Belt Conference, announced the 2023-24 conference basketball schedule on Wednesday.Â
The Golden Eagles are reigning Sun Belt regular season champions after going 14-4 in conference play last season. That included an 82-71 statement win against Louisiana on Feb. 9 in front of a sellout crowd at Reed Green Coliseum. It was the first sellout since the 2008 season against Memphis at The Greenhouse.Â
Southern Miss opens the conference slate with a road game at Georgia Southern on Dec. 30. The Golden Eagles and Eagles battled in Hattiesburg last season before Ladner's squad pulled away for an 11-point win. The Sun Belt home opener will be played on Jan. 4 against Georgia State. James Madison comes to town for the second consecutive season on Jan. 6.
Following the short home stint, Southern Miss hits the road to play ULM on Jan. 11 and Troy on Jan. 13. They Golden Eagles won both of those road games last season. They then return home to host Arkansas State on Wednesday, Jan. 17 -- it's the first time Southern Miss will play a Wednesday Sun Belt game outside of the last week of the regular season. Troy comes to Hattiesburg on Jan. 20 before the Golden Eagles head out on a four-game road trip.Â
The road trip starts at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, Jan. 24. It will be the first time the two programs have ever met. The Golden Eagles then head to Marshall on Jan. 27. They come back to Hattiesburg for a quick practice stop before embarking on a trip to Jonesboro, Ark. to face Arkansas State on Jan. 31. Southern Miss then heads to Texas State on Feb. 3 in a rematch that helped the Golden Eagles clinch the regular season title last year.Â
With the monster road swing in the rearview mirror, Southern Miss comes back to Hattiesburg for a five-game homestand that begins with Old Dominion on Feb. 7. The MAC-SBC Challenge will pick up on Feb. 10 with a home game at Reed Green Coliseum against an opponent determined at a later date. The Golden Eagles get back to Sun Belt action on Feb. 15 when they host ULM on a Thursday night. Texas State travels to the Hub City that Saturday on Feb. 17.Â
The Golden Eagles close the regular season home schedule with games against South Alabama and Louisiana. The Jaguars come to Hattiesburg on Feb. 22 and then the Ragin' Cajuns make their trip on Feb. 24. The regular season ends with a road trip to South Alabama on Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Louisiana on Friday, March 1.Â
The 2024 Hercules Tures Men's Basketball Championship at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Fla. will be played March 5-11.Â
