HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After enjoying their first day of summer camp Sunday, the Southern Miss football team returned to practice Monday morning at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The Golden Eagles were treated with some cloud cover and some breeze for the first time during camp as they went 2 hours, and 20 minutes in shoulder pads and shorts for their fifth practice of the summer.
"[It was a] fun day today," said third-year coach Will Hall. "The Good Lord blessed us with great weather—we actually had a little bit of cloud cover today. We've been praying hard for the Good Lord to bring the fan out for us and he did today, had a little wind blowing so it was a little cooler. Our kids flew around We threw and caught the ball well today."
Hall also reviewed the team's Saturday practice with his team's ability to not only get some scrimmage-type work in, but also play on the team's new game field for the first time.
"The offense really ran the ball well early and the defense really did a good job late," said Hall. "You saw some back-and-forth like we said. We're seeing a lot of growth and some things we want to improve on.
"This was our fifth day of install. The foundation is laid. We're going to put the pads on fully, that's our first time to do that. We're going to tackle tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see what that looks. We're continuing to add situations, we did some more third-and-medium and third-and-long. We'll get into the low red [zone] here in the next day or two and do some short yardage eventually and then we'll do some two-minute drill by the end of the week. Situationally, we're getting better and better and our young guys are growing."
As for the new field, the addition is huge for the program and it a great hit so far during the early going.
"Players love it, recruits love it, and our fans are going to love it," said Hall. "It's just been great all the way around for our program."
The Golden Eagles return to practice Tuesday morning as they continue to get ready for the upcoming season and Alcorn State on Saturday, Sept. 2.
Tickets are still available for the six home games this fall. Fans can contact purchase tickets at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or visit the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office on campus weekdays during normal business hours.
