Southern Miss' Comeback Attempt Falls Short at Houston

HOUSTON,Texas-Southern Miss nearly forced No. 19 Houston to five sets on their home court in Fertitta Center Saturday night, but the Cougars closed out the fourth set to win the match 3-1.
The Golden Eagles found themselves in a 2-0 hole after falling short of returning from Houston's runs early in the game. The Cougars pushed ahead by up to seven points in the first set and up to a nine-point advantage in the second set, which Southern Miss could not overcome.
The Golden Eagles turned the game around in the third set, which was a back-and-forth affair with twelve ties and five lead changes. After tying at 19 apiece, Southern Miss pulled ahead on a 3-0 run and did not surrender its lead. Aysu Dalogullari closed the set out with a kill to win the set 25-23.
Facing a must-win situation, the Golden Eagles kept its momentum heading into the fourth set as a pair of kills from Mia Wesley gave the team an early lead. However, Houston staged a 7-1 run that pushed the score to 18-9.Â
Southern Miss fought back and reduced the lead all the way to one point, but the Cougars escaped a fifth set after consecutive errors from the Golden Eagles.
Mia Wesley recorded her first double-double of the season with a game-high 22 kills and 11 digs. She has recorded 20-plus kills in 17 games during her career with the Black & Gold. Cailin Demps notched 13 kills, which landed one shy of tying her career-high. Â
Dalogullari recorded a team-high 15 digs, followed by freshman setter Hayden Riddle's 14 digs. Riddle recorded her first career double-double by also tallying 17 assists.
