HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Second-year head coach Jenny Hazelwood has announced the 2023 Southern Miss volleyball schedule. The slate features a home tournament in early September and a handful of big-time Sun Belt Conference matches.
The Golden Eagles, who went 21-12 with a NIVC Final Four run last season, open the season in Houston as they battle Rice on Aug. 25. Southern Miss will travel across town for the Flo Hyman Classic at Houston. It will play the Cougars on Aug. 26 and Southern California on Aug. 27. The USC contest will feature a Hazelwood reunion as Allie Hazelwood -- the daughter of Jenny Hazelwood -- is a freshman setter for the Trojans.
Southern Miss stays on the road the following weekend as it travels to Stephen F. Austin for a three-game set against Nicholls (Sept. 1), Cal Poly (Sept. 1) and the Jacks (Sept. 2). The Golden Eagles make the return trip to Nacogdoches, Texas after they welcomed the Jacks to Hattiesburg last season.
The schedule then features the Golden Eagle Classic Sept. 8-9. The Black and Gold open the tournament against Nicholls on Friday night at 7 p.m. Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State will both be on Saturday's slate of matches for the Golden Eagles. Non-conference play ends with a trip to Memphis for the Beale Street Challenge. Southern Miss is set to take on the Tigers (Sept. 15), Little Rock (Sept. 15) and Arizona State (Sept. 16).
The Golden Eagles open Sun Belt play with back-to-back road trips. The first trip features a two-game series at South Alabama on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22. The following week, Southern Miss will play at Troy on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30. The conference home opener is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 5 against ULM. The two rivals will tangle on Oct. 6, too. The Golden Eagles stay in Hattiesburg for another weekend as they welcome Texas State to town on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14.
Southern Miss then embarks on another road trip as it heads to Jonesboro, Ark. to take on Arkansas State. Matches are scheduled for Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 against the Red Wolves. The following weekend, the Golden Eagles will travel to Atlanta to face Georgia State on Oct. 27 and Oct. 28. With road trips in the rearview mirror, the Golden Eagles return to the Hub City to host Louisiana on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3. The regular season wraps up at the Wellness Center against Old Dominion on Nov. 10 and Nov. 11.
The Sun Belt Championships will be held in Foley, Ala. starting Wednesday Nov. 15. The title match is scheduled for Nov. 19.
