LEXINGTON, Ky. – Southern Miss beach volleyball earned a spot USMC/AVCA Academic Team Award list for academic performance in the 2022-23 academic year. The Golden Eagles were also tabbed on the Team Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a GPA inside the top 20 percent of all Division I beach volleyball programs.
"I am beyond excited for the team to receive both of these awards," said Southern Miss head coach Shawn Taylor. "Not only did we have our best season on the court, but we didn't compromise our academic performance to do it. This speaks volumes for the work that these young women have put in."
The award honors teams maintaining GPAs of 3.3 or better for the entire academic year and has been awarded each season since 1992-93. Southern Miss' 2023 selection is the third in the program's history and marks back-to-back years on the list for the first time.
"We are very proud of our beach volleyball program and their success in the classroom," said Southern Miss Director of Athletics, Jeremy McClain. "I want to thank Coach Taylor and our Associate AD for Academics, Kylie Amato, for their leadership in this team achievement. These student-athletes are a great example of our commitment to the entire student-athlete experience, and they continue to represent Southern Miss the right way."
Southern Miss' 2023 nod is the first time the Golden Eagles have found themselves on the Team Academic Honor Roll as the team's GPA made the top 20 percent of all Division I beach volleyball programs awarded the Team Academic Award.
Over the 2022-23 academic year, Southern Miss maintained a team GPA of 3.69 on a 4.0 scale. Six Golden Eagles had perfect 4.0 GPAs over the year and seven others had GPAs north of 3.5. Seven student-athletes made the Fall 2022 President's List while 10 qualified in Spring 2023.
