NEW ORLEANS -Â Southern Miss right-handed pitcher Morgan Leinstock has been named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week after she helped the Golden Eagles to a series win at Georgia State.Â
"I am so proud of Morgan and her fight for this team," said head coach Natalie Poole. "She was determined last week to do the job for us, and it showed on the field. This honor is well deserved."
Leinstock picked up a win in Thursday's series opener after throwing a complete game with six strikeouts. The senior limited the Panthers to four hits and one run over seven innings of action. After dropping Friday's game to Georgia State, Saturday set up a must-win situation for Southern Miss if it wanted to make a postseason appearance.
The Scottsdale, Ariz. native rose to the occasion and delivered another dominant performance. Leinstock tossed her second complete game of the weekend in a 2-1 win over the Panthers. She struck out 11 batters for the third time this season and finished one off her season high. She gave up four hits and walked none in the regular season finale.Â
Leinstock lowered her season ERA to 2.54 and has the 10th-best ERA among Sun Belt pitchers that have thrown at least 100 innings. Her 180 strikeouts rank fourth in the conference and 48th in Division I softball.Â
The Golden Eagles open the Sun Belt Tournament on Wednesday, May 10 against seventh-seeded Coastal Carolina. First pitch from Lafayette, La. is slated for 1 p.m. Click HERE to visit Championship Central.
