
Men's Basketball Signs Former Top-100 Recruit Victor Iwuakor

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Southern Miss men's basketball head coach Jay Ladner announced the signing of UNLV transfer Victor Iwuakor on Wednesday afternoon. Iwuakor joins Bryson Hall in the 2023-24 recruiting class.Â
The former top-100 recruit out of high school played two seasons for the Runnin' Rebels after transferring from Oklahoma. Last season, Iwuakor appeared in 27 games and made eight starts. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 2.6 points per game and 3.4 rebounds per game. He also shot a sizzling .591 from the floor. The big man went for eight points and eight rebounds against Southern Miss last season in Las Vegas. Iwuakor's season high in points was nine at Utah State on January 17, while he logged a season-high 32 minutes that night. He pulled down nine rebounds against Minnesota in a non-conference game on November 23. Almost half of his 113 total rebounds were offensive boards, grabbing 53 on that end of the floor.Â
His junior campaign at UNLV saw him play in 19 games with eight starts. His minutes were limited due to an upper body injury, but he averaged 2.2 points per game and 2.3 rebounds per game. He scored in 13 games during the 2021-22 season and had a season-high six points at Fresno State.Â
Prior to UNLV, Iwuakor spent two seasons at Oklahoma. The former four-star recruit played in 49 career games for the Sooners and made one start. His sophomore season in Norman came with an expanded role as the Abuja, Nigeria native averaged 2.9 points per game and 2.6 rebounds per game. He scored in 13 games and recorded 10 points in his first appearance of the season against Xavier. He scored a season-high 12 points against Houston Baptist and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds against Texas Tech. His lone start was in a Big 12 game against West Virginia.Â
Iwuakor appeared in two NCAA Tournament games at Oklahoma, including 17 minutes on the floor in a first round game against Missouri. As a freshman, Iwuakor played in 26 games and averaged 8.7 minutes per game. He scored a career-high 13 points against Maryland Eastern Shore on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. He went for seven points and six rebounds in his Sooner debut against UTSA.
While prepping at Sulphur Springs High School (Texas), Iwuakor was one of the top-90 players in the class of 2019. He was listed as a top-20 forward in his class by ESPN and averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks per game his senior season. Iwuakor was named his district's defensive MVP in 2017 and overall district MVP in 2018.Â
