LAFAYETTE, La. – Southern Miss (22-24, 6-17 Sun Belt) gave up a three-run walk-off homerun on Wednesday afternoon as seventh-seeded Coastal Carolina (36-19, 11-13 Sun Belt) won 4-2 in 10 innings at the Sun Belt Tournament. The loss in Lafayette, La. put an end to Southern Miss' season.
Morgan Leinstock spun a gem in the loss, throwing 133 pitches over 9.1 innings. The senior gave up her first hit of the game to Delaney Keith on a one-out single in the sixth. Leinstock struck out five, while limiting the Chanticleers to seven hits.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the opening game after Scout Jennings drove in Natalie Taylor on a two-out single in the top of the fourth. Southern Miss held the lead into the sixth inning until a soft grounder to first base scored a Coastal Carolina run with two outs.
An extra-inning affair was in store after both teams failed to score in the seventh inning. The Golden Eagle offense came alive in the top of the 10th after Maria Smith smoked a ball into the outfield that allowed Hannah Borden to score – both of Southern Miss' two runs today came with two outs.
Leinstock went into the 10th inning looking to close the door on Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers opened the frame with back-to-back singles that brought up leadoff hitter Diamond Williams. Williams lined out to Jennings in left field to get Southern Miss a much-needed out.
Unfortunately, Keith – who broke up Leinstock's no-no – turned on a pitch that launched over the right field fence. The homerun gave Coastal Caroline the two-run win and a spot in the quarterfinals against second-seeded Marshall.
Borden ended her season going 3-for-5 against the Chanticleers, upping her season batting average to .324. Jana Lee and Jennings both had two hits today, while Jennings and Smith accounted for one RBI each.
The Golden Eagles finished Natalie Poole's first season with a 22-24 mark, while going 6-17 in Sun Belt play.
