Softball Bounces Back With 4-2 Win Over Kennesaw
3/3/2023 10:32:00 PM | Softball
ATLANTA— After a lengthy day of bad weather on March 4 at Bailey Park, the Southern Miss softball team (13-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) opened the I-75 Challenge with a 4-2 victory over Kennesaw State (5-11, 0-0 ASUN).
Due to thunderstorms and a tornado watch in the Atlanta area, the Golden Eagles and Owls were unable to take the field until 7:00 p.m. and only played one game. Both teams were originally slated to play a doubleheader at 3:00 and 6:00.
The Golden Eagles scored right away after stepping onto the diamond when Maria Smith scored in the top of the first inning due to a fielding mistake, followed by Caroline Worrell's bunt that allowed Kinsley Gordon to shift to third and Lorna Agren to score.
It took the Owls until the bottom of the fourth inning to respond, when DP Brinaya Bailey singled to left center, allowing third baseman Taylor Cates to score after being hit by a pitch, reaching first, and then stealing second.
The Golden Eagles' scoring was finalized in the top of the sixth inning when Jana Lee scored after Agren advanced to base on an error. Then Agren could score when Caroline Worrell singled and advanced to second on a left fielder error.
The Owls made an effort to tie the game, but they were only successful in scoring when Bailey doubled to center field and brought Stella Henry home.
In the circle, Morgan Leinstock (6-2) had an impressive outing, striking out 12 batters while only allowing two walks and two runs. Jana Lee led the squad with a 3-2 record at the plate.
The Black & Gold will have a 2 p.m. matchup against Georgia Tech tomorrow live stats and a streaming link is available on our schedule.
