HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore right-hander Niko Mazza (Madison, Miss.) garnered the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week award released Tuesday afternoon by the league office.
Mazza won his team-best third game by posting career highs in both innings (7.0) and strikeouts (11) in a 11-5 victory in the series finale over Valparaiso, which also clinched the series win.
He finished by allowing a run on three hits with two walks, two HBP and 11 punchouts. He gave up all three hits in succession, all singles coming in the third, with the last one driving in the only run he gave up.
After allowing a walk and HBP to open the second, he retired the next three batters - the last two via strikeout - to end the threat. After allowing the three-straight hits in the third, Mazza retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced. He fanned at least one batter in all seven innings, including two in a frame four times.
It is the second-straight week the Golden Eagles have garnered this award, having Matt Adams win it last week. It was the first career award for Mazza.
The Golden Eagles (10-5) return to action this evening when they play at Southeastern Louisiana. Game time is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as the Southern Miss Gameday app.
