
The Golden Eagles Split doubleheader with Tulsa and SIUE

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (6-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) split day two of the Golden Eagle Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex with a loss to Tulsa (4-5, 0-0 AAC) 4-2 before a 1-0 victory over SIUE (0-6, 0-0 OVC) for their nightcap.Â
The Golden Eagles moved 6-1 overall on the season. Tulsa improved to 4-5, while SIEU fell 0-6.Â
Game 1: Tulsa 4, Southern Miss 2Â
Tulsa started off the scoring when third baseman Celeste Wood singled to the left side in the top of the third inning to drive center fielder Haley Morgan home. The Black and Gold quickly responded to tie the score 1-1 when Maria Smith offered a sacrifice bunt, bringing Scout Jennings home.Â
First baseman Claire Skaggs found a triple to right field that scored both Wood and left fielder Mackenzie Denison to push the Golden Hurricane lead in the top of the fifth.Â
Tulsa capped their scoring shortly after in the top of the fifth after shortstop Imani Edwards singled to center field, leading Skaggs to home.Â
Southern Miss attempted to find three runs as they trailed behind Tulsa heading into the bottom of the seventh but could only score once when Riley Stephens singled and advanced to second on the throw for Jennings to advance to third, who got out at home as Lee scored.Â
Offensively, Scout Jennings was the lone Golden Eagle player with multiple hits, going 3-2 at the plate.Â
Morgan Leinstock (3-1) received the loss in the circle for Southern Miss. The senior pitched a complete game with nine hits and four runs and allowed six strikeouts.Â
Game 2: Southern Miss 1, SIUE 0Â
After three innings, the Golden Eagles were able to break the scoring stalemate when designated player Jana Lee slung a shot to left center in the bottom of the fourth for a double, allowing Lorna Agren to reach home.Â
Natalie Taylor attempted to get the scoring going again in the bottom of the sixth, shooting a triple to center field for her first of the year; Lorna Agren was in a position to score but grounded out.Â
Jana Lee (1-0) pitched a complete game shutout to earn a 1-0 mark for the season after pitching seven scoreless frames. Lee allowed zero runs striking out eight batters.Â
