HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team concludes its 2023 season, Saturday, when they entertain Sun Belt Conference Western Division foe Troy at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Game time is set for 11 a.m., and can be seen on ESPNU, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and via online.
The Golden Eagles (3-8 overall, 2-5 Sun Belt) look to conclude the season with a victory.
The two teams meet for the 13th time on the gridiron with Southern Miss holding an 8-4 series advantage, but the Trojans (9-2, 6-1) have won the last two contests between the two schools.
Troy enters the game with an eight-game winning streak, after defeating Louisiana 31-24 at home last weekend.
Saturday will be senior day on the Golden Eagle campus as 20 players will be recognized pregame on the field.
Heading into the tilt, Frank Gore, Jr., looks to improve on his 1,000-yard rushing season, after going over that plateau last weekend. He became only the fifth Golden Eagle to ever register 1,000-yard marks in multiple seasons with the others being Damion Fletcher (four times), Ito Smith (three times), Derrick Nix (three times) and Ben Garry (twice).
Gore, Jr. has 1,036 yards on the ground, which is the 18th-best rushing season in school history. He also leads the team with 1,098 all-purpose yards in 2023, gaining 108.9 yards per contest.
At quarterback, the Golden Eagles will go with either Billy Wiles or Ethan Crawford for the final game of the season. Wiles needs 60 yards to reach 2,000 passing yards this season, which would be the 17th time that has happened in school history. Crawford, a true freshman, made his first start last weekend at Mississippi State and pushed the team down the field on the opening possession for a touchdown.
The top target for Golden Eagle quarterbacks this season has been Jakarius Caston, who has a team-best 606 receiving yards on 32 catches. Last weekend, Caston returned his first kickoff of the year 98 yards for a touchdown, which was the program's first since the 2021 campaign.
On defense, Dylan Lawrence continues to lead the squad in tackles with 75, while Jay Stanley ranks second at 56. Swayze Bozeman and Hayes Maples each rank third with 49 apiece.
The Southern Miss 1958 UPI National College Division Championship team also celebrates its 65th anniversary during the game and will be recognized during the contest.
