Men's Tennis Wraps up Southern Miss Invitational with 15 Wins

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team enjoyed a productive weekend at the Southern Miss Fall Invitational. The Golden Eagles won 15 matches over the three-day event at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex.

"We played really well at home I thought," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We had some big wins over Sun Belt teams, and I think that's a good measuring stick of where we're at before conference play opens in the Spring. There was tough competition all weekend and that was the goal when scheduling this event."

Olimjon Nabiev went 2-0 in singles play with wins over New Orleans and Tulane on court three and four. Dakotah Bobo produced a pair of sweeps over New Orleans' Marcel Volz (6-3, 6-1) and Tulane's Billy Saurez (6-3, 6-3). Shamirul Shahril also picked up a pair of singles wins after beating David Tesic (UNO) and Jack Clements. The win over Clements was a Sun Belt preview as he beat the South Alabama product via a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 score.

Freshman Rasmus Becker posted a pair of wins with a two-set over Louisiana's Grant Landreth (6-2, 6-4) and three-set win over South Alabama's Theo Mottier (6-3, 4-6, 13-11). In doubles, Henry Lamchinniah and Saheb Sodhi got the lone win on Friday of Louisiana. The duo beat Mason and Grant Landreth on court two with a 6-3 victory. They added another 6-4 win on Saturday against South Alabama's Rostislav Halfinger and Braden Hannig. Bobo and Shahril beat the Jaguars' top pair by a 6-2 score.

Lamchinniah and Sodhi went 3-0 in doubles on the weekend after grabbing a 6-3 win on Sunday morning. Their final win was a 6-3 contest over Mark and Matthew Armbruster from New Orleans.

The Golden Eagles are back in action on the ITA Regionals on Oct. 12. The four-day event will be play in Auburn, Ala.
