Golden Eagles Ride Hot Doubles Play at ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team rode a hot doubles start this weekend at the ITA Southern Regionals in Auburn, Ala. The Golden Eagles saw all four doubles teams advance out of the first round in the Main Draw.

"I am pleased with how our doubles play started on Friday," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We beat a very good Auburn team and then three other quality opponents. Shamirul Shahril and Olimjon Nabiev both played at a high level in singles. Overall, I thought we had a good showing and I think we'll be ready to go next weekend in Louisiana."

Shamirul Shahril and Olimjon Nabiev had success in the Qualifying Draw for singles play before bowing out in the championship matches in their respective quadrant. Shahril defeated Federico Scotuzzi (6-1, 6-3) and Benjamin Ambrosio (6-2, 0-6, 11-9) before losing to Samford's Sandeep Mohandoss in the Qualifying Draw title. Mohandoss won the three-set match via a 2-6, 7-5, 13-11 score. Nabiev, who had a bye in the first round, beat Nicolas Simkin ( 6-2, 6-2) in the second round and then lost to Ole Miss' Noah Schlagenhauf the next round.

Bobo was the only Golden Eagle to earn a spot in the Main Draw, qualifying straight in based off his rating. The Lafayette, La. native beat Tulane's Luka Petrovic in the frist round after Petrovic retired in the second set. Stefan Latinovic of LSU then beat Bobo 6-3, 6-4 in the next round. Henry Lamchinniah, Rasmus Becker and Shahril each won a match in the Consolation Draw.

Pasawee Reansuwong and Nabiev picked up a massive doubles win on Friday after beating No. 7 William Nolan/Billy Blaydes of Auburn. The Golden Eagle pairing won 6-4 before losing 8-2 in the next round. Bobo and Shahril topped Louisiana's Samuel Kyjaci/William Robero 6-1. Pawin Jirapoomdaje and Rasmus Becker beat Alabama A&M's Samrakshyak Bajracharya/Kristofer Johnson via a 6-1 score. Saheb Sodhi and Lamchinniah picked up a 6-1 win over UAB's Gergios Nouchakis/Parker Bradbary.

Southern Miss will head to Lafayette, La. for the Cajun Classic on Oct. 22. The three-day event will be played at Louisiana and run through Sunday.
