NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Southern Miss sophomore outside hitter Mia Wesley was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday morning after leading the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 weekend at the Mercer Classic.
"Mia was a force offensively this past weekend," said head coach Jenny Hazelwood. "We have a number of hitters that can score, but she is the kind of hitter than can score with the entire gym knowing she will get the ball set to her.
"She has such a wide range of shots and can hit from the front row and back row. The constant threat opens up a lot of other options for us offensively."
Wesley was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament after notching 65 kills for a 5.42 kills per set average. The Orem, Utah native swung at a .347 hitting clip to go along with seven service aces. Wesley's 25 kills against Charleston Southern and Queens were a season high and marked the third time this season she's recorded 20-plus kills in a match.
Hazelwood's offensive leader currently leads the Sun Belt in kills per set (5.27) and points per set (6.14). Wesley ranks fourth in the country in points per set and is tied for fifth in kills per set.
The honor is the first Sun Belt award any Golden Eagle has earned since Southern Miss transitioned to the Sun Belt Conference July 1. The Golden Eagles will return home this weekend to host the Southern Miss Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Black and Gold kick off their portion of the tournament on Friday night against Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m.
