MACON, Ga. – Southern Miss finished a perfect weekend with a pair of victories, defeating Charleston Southern in five sets before sweeping Queens University of Charlotte in straight sets at Hawkins arena to improve to 5-1 on the year.
"This is a great start for what we're trying to accomplish with our girls this season," said head coach Jenny Hazelwood. "We fought through a lot to pick up a gritty win over Charleston Southern and played really well as a team in all phases in the final match of the weekend."
Mia Wesley was named tournament MVP after tallying 65 kills across the three matches, including 50 over the two matches today, with 25 in each of the victories for the Golden Eagles on Saturday.
Kenzie Smith just missed a career high in the match against the Buccaneers, dishing out 52 assists to help lift Southern Miss in the first five-set battle of the season for the Black and Gold and earn All-Tournament honors with 129 helpers on the weekend.
Cara Atkinson also picked up All-Tournament honors with 27 kills over the course of the three wins, with 10 in the victory over Charleston Southern, before following it up with nine in the finale against Queens.
The Golden Eagles return to Hattiesburg to host the Southern Miss Invitational on Friday and Saturday, opening against Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
