NEW ORLEANS --Â Southern Miss sophomore libero Megan Harris was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week following the opening weekend of conference play.
Harris helped the Golden Eagles to a weekend split against South Alabama, the reigning Sun Belt Tournament champions. In Friday's match, Harris exploded for a career-high 32 digs in a tight four-set loss to the Jaguars. Her 32 digs are the most by any conference player during the opening weekend of Sun Belt play and the second-most of any player through the first five weeks of the season. The Nesbit, Miss. native also added three assists and a service ace to Friday's stat sheet.Â
"Megan Harris has been so determined and working hard since she got on campus," said Southern Miss head coach Jenny Hazelwood. "She has all of the attributes a coach would want in a great libero and I'm so excited to see her hard work paying off."
In Saturday's five-set win, Harris finished with 29 digs, which was her previous career high that was set the previous weekend. She finished that match with two assists. She averaged a Sun Belt-best 6.78 digs per set over the opening weekend of league play -- no other player in the conference averaged more than five digs per set. In all matches combined, Harris has a league-best 245 total digs and is second in digs per set (4.62). Nationally, she ranks 46th in digs per set.Â
"To have the kind of numbers she did against such a strong offensive team was even more impressive," Hazelwood said. "Maddux, Capizzi and company could really score and hit with so much range. Megan showed a lot of fight both matches against such a good team."
The Golden Eagles will continue Sun Belt play this weekend when they host Troy on Friday and Saturday at the Southern Miss Wellness Center. First serve on Friday is 6 p.m., while Saturday's match is scheduled for 3 p.m.
