HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Jason Baker returns for his fifth year of play-by-play duties for Southern Miss football home television broadcasts and will be joined by former Golden Eagle quarterback Austin Davis this season for five ESPN+ broadcasts this fall starting with the season opener, Saturday, against Liberty.
Baker is no stranger to Golden Eagle fans. The long-time Voice of Lady Eagle Basketball, Baker held that role from 2002 until 2008 and has returned to that role since the 2018-19 season.
His work with Golden Eagle football included serving as a spotter for the radio broadcasts from 2004-07, before elevating to sideline reporter for the 2008 and 2009 campaigns.
His additional work with Golden Eagle athletics includes working with Southern Miss baseball radio broadcasts, serving as color analyst in 2007 and 2008 and fill-in play-by-play duties since 2002. His experience also include play-by-play for the softball program, along with being host of Southern Miss Sports Today TV show with Joye Lee-McNellis from 2002-08 and the radio program, Lady Eagle Fastbreak, during that time.
Baker also was the Voice of the Wildcats at Pearl River Community College from 2000-15, where he called four consecutive state titles and the 2004 and 2006 national championships for the school. He also helped co-create the nation's first junior college head coaches show "The Tim Hatten Show" in 2006.
Davis, a quarterback for the Golden Eagles from 2008-11, who tallied 30 career wins during his four-year career, helped lead the program to a 12-2 mark that includes a Conference USA and Hawai'i Bowl championship during his senior campaign.
During his career, Davis captured the Burlsworth Trophy national award for transitioning from a walk-on player to standout performer for his team, as well as winning the Conerly Trophy for top football player in the state of Mississippi in 2011. He was a two-time All-Conference USA second-team selection, made the league's All-Freshman team in 2008 and was a two-time C-USA All-Academic Team pick.
Following college, Davis signed as an undrafted free agent by the St. Louis Rams in 2012 and went on to play for seven National Football League franchises over the next seven seasons. He played in 16 career games in the NFL with 10 starts and threw for 2,548 yards on 236-of-378 passes for a 62.4 completion percentage. He ended with 13 touchdown throws and 12 interceptions in his career.
He spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons on the coaching staff for the Seattle Seahawks, serving as quarterbacks coach in his final season there.
