Golden Eagles Fall Twice on Friday at JSU Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Southern Miss women's volleyball team faced stiff competition at the JSU Invitational on Friday, falling to a pair of undefeated teams on the opening day. The Golden Eagles fell in straight sets to Auburn (9-0, 0-0 SEC) before falling in four sets to Jacksonville State (12-0, 0-0 ASUN) in the nightcap.
Auburn 3, Southern Miss 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21)
Southern Miss fell in straight sets to undefeated Auburn on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Jacksonville Invitational. Mia Wesley paced the Golden Eagles yet again, going for a game-high 14 kills on 36 attempts. She swung at a .250 clip and added eight digs on the defensive side of the ball. Freshman Cailin Demps recorded six kills, while Cara Atkinson and Gillian Hidalgo each added five kills. Setter Kenzie Smith dished out 28 assists to her attackers and finished with three kills on seven attempts.
Jacksonville State 3, Southern Miss 1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18)
Wesley paced both squads with a game-high 22 kills to up her Friday total to 36 kills across seven sets. The Gamecocks took the first set after pulling away following a string of Southern Miss errors. Jenny Hazelwood's squad responded in the second set to even up the match. The Golden Eagles and Gamecocks traded points for much of the frame before Southern Miss built a three-point lead – its largest of the set – and then held on to win, 25-23.
On its home court, Jacksonville State took control in the final two frames and held off Southern Miss from making a comeback attempt. Demps shined in the four-set loss, finishing with a career-high 10 kills at a .310 clip. Atkinson added 11 kills, while Madi Bowles finished with eight kills off the bench. Smith tallied 45 assists and Harris finished with a team-high 15 digs.
