NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Southern Miss sophomore outside hitter Mia Wesley was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week after guiding the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 weekend at the Southern Miss Invitational.
"Mia had three more outstanding performances this past weekend, even when our opponents came into the matches knowing that she is a go-to attacker for us," said Southern Miss head coach Jenny Hazelwood. "She was phenomenal in our Friday match against SFA and was virtually unstoppable at times. She found ways to score, not just with her attacks, but had great point scoring runs from behind the service line and few crucial stuff blocks for points."
Wesley is only the second Golden Eagle to earn back-to-back player of the week honors after Kelsea Seymour did so twice during her career. The Orem, Utah native was named to the Southern Miss Invitational All-Tournament Team after recording 61 kills (5.55 kills per set) on a .274 hitting clip. She totaled a Sun Belt-leading 72.5 points on the week, which included a league-best nine service aces.
Against then-undefeated Stephen F. Austin, Wesley posted a career-high 31 kills and a career-high 18 digs in a five-set loss. Welsey's 31 kills are tied for the most by a Golden Eagle in a single match in program history. She closed out the tournament with an 18-kill, 11-dig performance against Houston Baptist. Southern Miss' 3-0 sweep of the Huskies helped them capture the title and move its overall season record to 7-2.
Wesley leads the Sun Belt in total kills (177), kills per set (5.36) and points per set (6.29). She ranks second nationally in both kills per set and points per set, third in total points and fourth in total kills.
