HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- Golden Eagle junior Alex Helbling was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after notching a clean sheet against No.9 Ole Miss. over the weekend; the league announced Sept. 13.
The goalkeeper from Highlands Ranch, Colo., totaled 13 saves over her two games with in-state opponents Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Helbling ended the weekend on Sunday afternoon in Oxford as she came up with six saves to keep the Rebels off the scoreboard with their 22 shots and 17 corner kicks. This is the first clean sheet of the season and the first tie against the Rebels in program history.
"It is not a surprise to hear such great news; she has been consistent and reliable from day one. Alex continues to lead and mentor our young squad in ways I have not seen before. She is a silent leader who is not afraid to hold people accountable. Receiving this award confirms her hard work, resilience, and standout performance she showed Sunday. I am very proud of her and am looking forward to the rest of the season," said Head Coach Mohammed El-Zare.
"Alex has developed so much through the time she has been here with us. Part of that is due to the amazing groups we have had in the goalkeeper department, and the other part is due to her understanding of what works and not sugar-coating while addressing it. It is great to work with someone that is willing to learn the good and bad feedback. This award and the clean sheet are well deserved because of her hard work but wouldn't happen without our back line, whole team focus, and effort from minute one, which I'm very proud of, "said Assistant Coach J.P. Valadares.
