Football Practices in Shoulder Pads for First Time Sunday in Preseason Camp

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Practice No. 3 for the Southern Miss football team Sunday morning on the game field at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium enabled the Golden Eagles to transition into shoulders pads for the initial time during fall camp.
"It is a whole lot more fun to have pads on," said second-year coach Will Hall after practice.
During the two-hour, 30-minute workout which produced likely the hottest day of camp thus far, the Golden Eagles worked on different parts of its installation, including through inside drill and punt period which Hall described as the best one that they had had since his arrival.
Hall especially praised the hitting during that punt period and mentioned to junior safety Jay Stanley how much fun the team's effort was to watch. Stanley responded that there was no way the 2021 Golden Eagles could have practice with this much intensity as they did not have the increased number of players to get repetitions thus far this fall.
Two position groups that many viewed as questions marks heading into the current year – quarterbacks and the offensive line – have also made great strides through the early going of practice according to Hall.
"I am pleased with our overall progression of our QB and O-Line, which were the biggest question marks from last year," said Hall. "We didn't play well at either spot (a year ago). We are much better now. Are we a finished product? No, but we are moving in the right direction."
One aspect of their improvement is the fact the offense has only committed one turnover in practice over the first three days, which came off a ricochet on a pass play.
As a whole, Hall likes the direction of his team after getting the chance to hit in shoulder pads for the first time and gives him the confidence that this team wants to compete heading into the 2022 season.
"You want kids that have ability, that have attitudes and want to be coached," said Hall. "And we have that."
The Golden Eagles return to practice Monday morning.
