HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Normally when second-year Southern Miss football coach Will Hall addresses the media following practice each day, he talks about players on the team that have been enjoying success during preseason camp.
Following practice Friday, Hall repeated this process during his opening statement by mentioning seven different players by name.
But it wasn't until answering the first question from a media member that he talked about two guys he hadn't spoken about all fall, but who have each enjoyed a great preseason camp.
"Two guys that I don't talk about a lot that have had as good a fall camp and can argue that have been the best players on the team, are Frank Gore and Jay Stanley," said Hall. "It's almost that you forget to talk about them because they are just good."
Gore, Jr., rushed for a team-high 801 yards and five touchdowns last fall, while Stanley collected 56 tackles. Including 4.5 for loss and one sack to go along with two interceptions a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
The duo has quietly gone about their business during this camp, each helping solidify their side of the ball.
One other question Hall fielded during his media availability was his thoughts on the pace of the offense during the first week.
"It has been good," said Hall. "The defense has to set the standard of practice and the offense has to set the tempo and pace. Both groups have gotten better in that. We had one issue again today where we touched the quarterback and that is not the standard, but our tempo and pace is getting better. I believe we will be able to play much faster than we were last year."
The Golden Eagles continue to work toward their season opener, Sept. 3, at home against Liberty.
