HATTIESBURG, Miss. –Southern Miss high jumper Corvell Todd has been named the Conference USA Male Field Athlete of the Year, after earning All-American honors both indoor and outdoor this season, as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
"No one could be more deserving," said head coach Jon Stuart. "Corvell has been outstanding all season long. He placed higher at the NCAA Championships than any other athlete, won a conference title and was voted as Athlete of the Year here at Southern Miss. I'm extremely proud of Corvell and the hard work that he's put in this year."
Todd cleared 7'3.75" at the 2022 C-USA Indoor Championships to earn his second-straight indoor high jump title to secure his spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships. For Southern Miss, it marked the fourth-straight title in the men's high jump, as Todd joined Eric Richards (2019 & 2020) as back-to-back champions.
For the Byhalia, Miss. native, the mark was a new personal best at the time, the fourth-best mark in the country at the time and the second-best indoor mark in program history and earned him Male Co-Field Performer of the Meet honors.
Todd rose to the occasion at the NCAA Indoor Championships, shattering the previous school record to earn second place with a personal-best clearance of 7'6.0" at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
He became the highest male finisher at the NCAA Indoor Championships in program history with his second-place performance, joining Kenny Glenn, who finished third in the 55m dash in 1989, as medal-winners for the men's team and became one of just three Southern Miss student-athletes to medal at an NCAA meet. Todd joined triple jumper John Warren as the only two-time NCAA First Team All-Americans, following his fifth-place performance a season ago at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Todd battled through injuries during the 2022 outdoor season, but was able to earn a spot at the NCAA East Preliminary, where he finished 10th to punch his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the first time in his career.
At NCAAs, Todd cleared the starting height of 6' 10.75" on his first attempt to get things started. He needed just two attempts to clear 7'0.5" and lock up the second team honors, before failing to get over the bar on his three attempts at 7'1.75" and finish in a tie for 10th overall in the country. Todd gave Southern Miss an All-American in the high jump for the third consecutive season, joining 2019 and 2021 All-American Eric Richards.
He joins Warren as the only other Golden Eagle to earn the distinction for Southern Miss.
