
Men's Basketball Lands Division I Transfers Austin Crowley and Neftali Alvarez

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â Southern Miss men's basketball head coach Jay Ladner has announced the signing of Austin Crowley and Neftali Alvarez for the 2022-23 season.Â
Crowley has spent the last three seasons at Ole Miss, where he appeared in 30 games and made 11 starts during his junior campaign. The West Point, Miss. native averaged 4.8 points per game, 1.7 rebounds per game and dished out a team-high 77 assists last season. During his sophomore season, Crowley appeared in 27 games and made two starts. As a freshman, he played in all 32 games and ranked third on the team in assists (53).
"We can't be more excited to have Austin Crowley join the Golden Eagles," Ladner said. "He brings an incredible amount of experience and ability. His commitment will help us in our vision to restore Golden Eagle basketball to national prominence."
The 6-foot-5 guard was rated a four-star recruit out of high school by 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals. Crowley played his final two years of high school ball at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas and averaged 15.2 points per game while garnering a McDonald's All-American nomination as a senior. Â
Alvarez comes from Mercer, where he played in 39 career games over two seasons. The Catano, Puerto Rico native spent his freshman season at Fairfield, where was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team. Alvarez started in 10 of the 12 games he played in last season, while averaging 12.6 points per game and dropping a season-high 28 points against Winthrop.Â
"Neftali brings great experience and toughness to our rebuilding process," Ladner said. "We are very excited that he's a Golden Eagle."
A 6-foot-2 guard, Alvarez prepped at Miami Christian School and won a pair of 5A-1A State Championships. He averaged 27 points and 11 rebounds as a senior en route to being named the 5A-1A Player of the Year.Â
