HATTIESBURG, Miss. – As part of its Founder's Day celebration at Southern Miss, Wednesday, March 30, the University honored individuals that have bestowed honor to the school that turned 112 this year.
One such honor given out during the ceremony was to Southern Miss women's soccer player Tay Collum, earning a spot on the University's Who's Who listing for this year.
From Brandon, Miss., Collum found her place at Southern Miss after transferring from another institution and has created an impact both on and off the field since her arrival.
From creating and overseeing a bible study group within the women's student-athletes at Southern Miss, to being involved in the "Night to Shine" by the Tim Tebow Foundation, as well as a part of the FCA Lead team, Collum has seen growth in her many aspects of college life. On the field, she was one of three Golden Eagles to start in every game last season.
Collum is an example of the culture being built within the Southern Miss women's soccer program by coach Mohammed El-Zare, and that is to be involved in the campus community and have started activities to raise awareness and developing a rapport with the student body.
"Coach Mo and, consequently the entire Southern Miss Women's Soccer program, is all about branching out in making connections off the field, on campus, and in the community," said Southern Miss women's soccer assistant coach JP Valadares. "Our squad is happy for Tay being recognized and truly sees this as something that shows a little bit of what our culture is about and a big part of the development of our student-athletes."
This recognition for Collum comes with a significant amount of appreciation from her teammates as the squad looks at her honor as a team accomplishment.
Her accolade is another example of the many accomplishments the team has been apart of which have included doing free soccer clinics at Tatum Park, assisting the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child, volunteering at local missions, and writing valentine's day cards for assisted living homes.
