HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss wide receiver Jason Brownlee and Golden Eagle defensive back Eric Scott, Jr., each were rewarded with the opportunity to play in postseason all-star games this week as a reward for their successes at the collegiate level while also giving them a potential path to play at the next level.
Brownlee (Starkville, Miss.) collected an invite to the 11th NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which is slated to take place, Jan. 28, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., while Scott is set to participate in the 98th East-West Shrine Game, set for Feb. 3, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In three seasons with the Golden Eagles, Brownlee posted 135 catches for 2,144 yards and 21 touchdowns. His touchdown total holds a No. 4 place in the school's career record book, while his receiving yards rank No. 5. He caught at least one pass in each of his final 24 games and registered at least one catch in 33 of 35 games he played as a Golden Eagle. Brownlee also started all but one contest during his Southern Miss career.
This season, Brownlee earned third-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors, while earned second-team All-Conference USA accolades in 2021 and an honorable mention pick in 2020.
Scott (Basehor, Kansas) posted 78 total tackles (51 solos) with two tackles for loss for 18 yards, 12 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and five interceptions in 34 career games over the last three seasons. Both of his interceptions in 2022 were returned for touchdowns including a 22-yard pick against Liberty and a 35-yard scoring return against nationally ranked Tulane in a win over the Green Wave.
Both players led the Golden Eagles to their first bowl game since 2019 and their first postseason victory since a 28-21 triumph over Louisiana in the 2016 New Orleans Bowl.
Brownlee becomes the first Southern Miss player to take part in the NFL Collegiate Bowl since defensive back Tarvarius Moore and defensive lineman Xavier Thigpen did it in 2018 and is the eighth Golden Eagle overall. Scott is the first Golden Eagle to join in the East-West Shrine activities since quarterback Nick Mullens and offensive lineman Cameron Tom in 2017, while also being the 19th overall.
Both games can be seen on the NFL Network.
