Head Cross Country Coach Nick Gibson Named Women's Coach of the Year

NEW ORLEANS–- Southern Miss head cross country coach Nick Gibson has been voted the league's women's coach of the year Sun Belt announced Wednesday, Nov. 9.
"I am very honored to receive this award, but it is a true team effort. It comes down to the girls who have been running well all year and performing well. Having the support staff to allow them to keep healthy and stay healthy and get stronger throughout the year as well. I am very fortunate to come away with this but at the end of the day it's the girls that do all the work," said head coach Nick Gibson.
Gibson helped lead the team to top-10 team finishes overall for the 2022 cross-country season as well as its first conference championship victory in program history at their first appearance at the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
Along with their overall conference win, the girls notched four all-conference titles and five runners placed in the top 16. Freshman Oliwia Wawrzyniakwith a time of 16:42.2 placed 3rd and freshman Isabela Ross with 17:03.5 placed 5th earning first team all-conference. Transfer Erin Phelps captured 9th with a time of 17:35.1 for second team all-conference, and Smilla Kolbe secured third team all-conference title with her 11th place showing with the time of 17:40.2. Senior Carlin Beal placed 16th with a time of 17:44.4.
Wawrzyniak also was named freshman runner of the year.
