HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss goes after its fourth-straight victory when they meet Georgia State at The Rock Saturday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m., in the school's annual Salute to Armed Forces game.
The game can be seen via ESPN+, as well as be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield.
During Eagle Walk, which takes place two hours prior to kickoff, and includes the entire football team, the procession will be led by a Maxx Pro a wheeled mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) armored military vehicle. Just prior to the game, a flyover takes place by UH60 Blackhawk helicopters courtesy of the Mississippi Army National Guard's 185th Aviation Brigade.
In addition, a pregame "bootline" will be formed for the football team to run through by the Camp Shelby Soldiers assigned to Joint Forces Headquarters along with other Mississippi Army National Guard units and at halftime, The Pride of Mississippi will perform a military tribute honoring the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. All Active-Duty military and Veterans are invited to participate.
The Golden Eagles (5-3 overall, 3-1 Sun Belt) meet the Panthers (3-5, 2-2) for the first time in their history. It looks to be a clash of two teams playing well heading into the weekend. Along with the Golden Eagles' success of late, GSU has won three of its last four contests, including a 31-17 triumph over Old Dominion at home last weekend.
Southern Miss' defense continues to lead the way for the program, including its run defense which ranks No. 30 in the country, by allowing just 105.7 yards per contest. The Golden Eagles also rank in the Top 10 in the FBS in sacks at No. 5 (3.62 per game) and No. 6 in tackles for loss (8.4 per contest). With their interception for a touchdown last week by Natrone Brooks, the Golden Eagles are tied for the nation's lead with Cincinnati and WKU for most defensive scores with four.
They will have to contend with dual-threat quarterback Darren Grainger, who has thrown for 1,482 yards on 106-of192 passes with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions, to go along with 500 yards rushing. His rushing totals rank second on the squad.
The Golden Eagles counter with true freshman quarterback Zach Wilcke, who makes his eighth start and has thrown at least one touchdown pass in every game he has appeared this season. For the year, Wilcke is 98-of-167 for 1,116 yards and nine touchdowns with nine interceptions.
His top target continues to be senior Jason Brownlee, who tallied his eighth career 100-yard receiving game last week with three catches for 102 yards. Brown leads the team in 2022 in catches (34) and yards (499), along with touchdown receptions (6). Brownlee ranks tied for No. 4 on the school's career chart for touchdown catches with 19 after getting a pair of receiving scores last week.
Frank Gore, Jr., continues to lead the team in rushing at 655 yards, averaging 81.9 per contest and 4.7 per carry with four touchdowns on the ground.
Following the Georgia State contest, the Golden Eagles get back on the road next weekend when they travel to Coastal Carolina for a Saturday, Nov. 12, game. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and airs on ESPNU.
