
Volleyball Falls in Second Round of SBC Tournament

FOLEY, Ala. – The inaugural season of the Jenny Hazelwood era comes to a close in a 1-3 loss to Georgia Southern in the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament.
Southern Miss (18-11, 10-6 Sun Belt) notched 47 kills and were led by Mia Wesley's (Orem, Utah // Portland) 18 on 46 attacks.
Kenzie Smith (Manhattan, Kan. // Kansas State) led the Golden Eagles with a .875 hitting percentage.
The first two sets proved to be twins in more ways than one, each ending a 25-23 decision in favor of Georgia Southern (16-11, 7-7 Sun Belt).
The first set was a back-and-forth affair where Georgia Southern, the fifth seed of the east division, outlasted Southern Miss.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead but Southern Miss stormed back late in the period to tie the set before failing to seal the deal.
The third set, with their backs against the wall, Southern Miss took an early lead and never looked back. Wesley had a team-high five kills along with Smith's 10 assists. The third set win allowed the Golden Eagles to live to fight another day.
In the final set, it was all Georgia Southern. The Eagles pushed the margin to 9-3 before a Southern Miss timeout. Ultimately, Georgia Southern finished the set up 25-11.
The Black & Gold hit an abysmal -.136 percent in the set.
