Beach Volleyball Kicks Off Fall Exhibitions in an Iron City Showdown

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss rolls into Fall exhibition play in the Iron City for two days of UAB's Fall Scrimmage. The Golden Eagles are joined by the host Blazers as well as Georgia State and LSU.
"We are looking forward to the opportunity to test ourselves this weekend," said fourth-year head man Shawn Taylor. "With the recent changes in NCAA, it puts a little more emphasis on the fall, which is exciting. Our training time has been limited but our returners have done a good job of pushing the pace. Tournaments like this one also allow us to examine potential partnerships without worrying about the results. We'll have great weather and an opportunity to compete with some of the best."
The Match
Southern Miss begins play on Friday, Oct. 7 against UAB at 2 p.m. at the UAB Beach Volleyball Courts. The Golden Eagles will split into six pairs against the Blazers.
Play begins with Southern Miss' flights two, four and six taking on the three even pairings from UAB.
At 3 p.m., the pairs switch out, placing both teams first, third and fifth pairs on the sands.
The even pairs return at 4 p.m. and the odd pairs play again at 5 p.m. to finish the day in Birmingham.
On Saturday, Oct. 8, Southern Miss opens pool play against Georgia State. The Golden Eagles split into eight pairs with the fifth and sixth pairs starting at 9 a.m.
The third and fourth pairs start at 10:10 a.m., the first and second at 11:20 a.m. and the seventh and eighth finish against the Panthers at 12:30 p.m. Due to injuries on the UAB roster, Southern Miss' seventh & eighth pairs will be playing with UAB's seventh & eight to complete the tournaments rosters.
Golden Eagle pairs start the latter half of the day against LSU at 1:40 p.m. with pairs five and six taking on the Tigers. The rotation stays the same, with pairs three and four playing at 2:50 p.m., one and two at 4:00 p.m. and the split sevens and eights at 5:10 p.m.
All Saturday matches will be played on courts four and five with Friday's matches taking place on courts one, two and three.
