HATTIESBURG, Miss. – When Southern Miss meets Louisiana for the first time in six seasons Thursday night at The Rock, the Golden Eagles will renew one of the longer rivalries in its football history.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be seen nationally on ESPN2 or heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield.
Currently, the Louisiana series ranks third in terms of games played at 52, trailing only Memphis (62) and Louisiana Tech (53) for most ever meetings. Southern Miss holds a 40-11-1 record against the Ragin' Cajuns, dating back to the initial game in 1923.
The Ragin' Cajuns dominated the beginning of the series by winning the first seven games between the two schools, but Southern Miss has won 40 of the last 45 meetings including the last nine dating back to a 43-20 triumph in Hattiesburg in 1994.
The last meeting between the two came in the 2016 New Orleans Bowl, in which the Golden Eagles registered a 28-21 victory in the Mercedes Benz Superdome in the only postseason meeting for the programs.
Allenzae Staggers set a bowl record for receiving yards (230) and tied another with catches (11), while Ito Smith rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while catching a pass for a third score to lead the Golden Eagles to the victory.
The Cajuns scored with 5:10 to play to cut the Golden Eagle advantage to seven and then got the ball back with just over two minutes to play, but a sack by defensive lineman Dylan Bradley and Xavier Thigpen followed by a pair of incompletions sealed the win for the Golden Eagles.
This edition of the series marks the first time the schools meet as members of the Sun Belt Conference, but not the first time as members of the same conference.
The two schools were together in the Gulf States Conference from 1948-51 and the Golden Eagles won all four meetings, including a 41-0 decision in the final league tilt played in 1951.
This will be the first time playing in Hattiesburg since 2008, when the Golden Eagles recorded a 51-21 win. The game marked the first contest for Larry Fedora as Golden Eagle head coach, while current UL coach Michael Desormeaux played as the Ragin' Cajun quarterback that day.
Southern Miss is 22-1 against Louisiana in games played in Hattiesburg.
